How To Measure Trampoline For New Mat

Blog 2460

To correctly measure a trampoline for a new mat, you must ignore the fabric of your old mat entirely and focus on three specific data points from the frame. Because old mats stretch over time, measuring the fabric will lead to purchasing the wrong size. Instead, follow this standard industry formula to ensure a perfect fit:

  • Measure the Frame Diameter: Measure the steel frame from the outer edge to the opposite outer edge across the center. Do this twice (vertically and horizontally) to get an average.
  • Measure the Spring Length: Remove one spring from the trampoline completely. Measure it from the tip of one hook to the tip of the other hook while it is unstretched (relaxed state).
  • Count the V-Rings: Count the total number of V-rings (the metal loops on the mat) or the corresponding holes in the frame to ensure the tension is distributed correctly.

Only when these three numbers match the manufacturer’s specifications should you place your order.

This video demonstrates how to measure a trampoline mattress:

Why You Must Never Measure The Old Hop Cloth

This is a mistake. You must completely ignore the size of the old cloth. After years of use and exposure to the sun and wind, the fibers of the trampoline cloth have long been elongated and extended. If you measure according to the deformed size, what you actually get is a large data.

New cushions bought based on these data are usually too loose, not only completely without resilience, but also cause serious safety risks. To be tight, safe and reliable, you must and can only rely on that rigid steel frame that never changes size.

Step 1: Measure The Frame Diameter

To learn how to measure trampoline jumping cloth, the first key data point is the frame size. It should be made clear here that this is not the size of the jumping cloth, but the size of the whole structure.

  • Outer Edge to Outer Edge: Put the tape on the outer edge of the steel frame, pass through the center of the trampoline, and pull straight to the outer edge directly opposite.
  • It’s Safe to Measure It Twice: Even if your trampoline looks round, it’s a little “out of shape” or slightly distorted after a long time. So I usually recommend to measure it vertically once and then horizontally again.
  • Calculate the Average: If there is a slight difference between the two data, calculate an average so as to determine its true frame size (e. g. whether it is 14 feet or 15 feet).

Step 2: Measure The Spring Length

This step is to ensure that the distance between the new jump cloth and the frame is appropriate. If the spring length is miscalculated, the result is either that the jump cloth won’t hang at all, or that it is loose and has no tension.

  • Remove the Root to Measure: Don’t be lazy and measure directly on the shelf, when the spring is tight and the reading is absolutely wrong. Remove root thoroughly and remove it from the frame.
  • Hook to Hook: Place it flat on the ground, leaving it in a naturally relaxed, unstretched state. Amount from the top of one hook to the top of the other.
  • Accuracy Is Key: Common sizes are usually 5.5 inches, 7 inches or 8.5 inches. This should not be sloppy, preferably accurate to millimeters, or at least within 1/8 inch of error.

Step 3: Inventory Triangular Rings (V-Rings)

The last step of this formula is to ensure that your new jumping cloth can be perfectly “seated” with the holes in the old frame “.

  • Count the Number of Rings: Walk circles along the edge of the jumping cloth, and count the metal triangular rings connecting the fabric one by one.
  • Check the Frame Holes: Alternatively, you can directly count the holes on the rail for hanging springs. The number is the same.
  • Why This Is Important: If your shelf has 72 holes and you order a cloth with 96 rings, the tension distribution is all messed up and won’t fit at all. Therefore, the number of V-ring must be exactly the same.
